Crops grown to a documented field record

Numbered blocks, tested soil, certified seed and metered irrigation. Every harvest leaves the farm with a batch code that names the field it came from.

The Cropping System

From seed lot to batch code

Our cropping land in Toba Tek Singh is divided into numbered blocks, and the block — not the farm — is the unit everything is recorded against. That is what makes a harvest traceable: when a buyer asks where a consignment of wheat came from, the answer is a block reference and a set of dated entries, not a district name.

Before sowing

Every block carries a current soil test covering organic matter, pH and the main nutrients. The test sets the fertiliser plan rather than the other way round, which is both cheaper and less damaging than applying to a schedule. Seed comes from certified lots, and the lot number is written into the sowing record.

Through the season

Irrigation is drawn from the canal system and metered by cycle. Counting cycles per block gave us our first honest picture of water use per tonne, and it is now the number we manage against. Input applications — fertiliser, crop protection — are logged with product, rate and date against the block.

Harvest and storage

Grain is sampled at three points for moisture and protein, and the results go into the batch record before anything moves. Harvested crop reaches covered storage within hours; for our own fodder that window matters as much as it does for grain destined for sale. A batch identifier is issued only once the file is complete.

Soil is the asset we are actually managing

A farm can borrow yield from its soil for a few seasons and call it performance. We would rather measure organic matter and structure, rotate deliberately, and accept the yield that practice supports.

Every block's test history stays on file, so the trend over years is visible — not just this season's number.

Mapped blocks, not a vague hectarage

Block boundaries are mapped, which is what allows an input log, an irrigation count and a harvest sample to refer to the same piece of ground with no ambiguity.

It also means a problem stays contained: if a sample fails, we know exactly which block and which batch to hold.

Frequently asked

What crops does SHAJRA Farms grow?
Wheat and maize as our main field crops, fodder for our own livestock, seasonal vegetables under controlled greenhouse lines, and orchard fruit. All are grown in Toba Tek Singh, Punjab.
How is a crop batch traced?
Each field block has a number. Sowing records the certified seed lot, irrigation logs count canal cycles, and quality sampling at harvest records moisture and protein. Those entries make up the batch record you can open from the pack.
Do you use chemical fertiliser and pesticide?
Where they are needed, and always recorded against the block with product, rate and date. Rotation with legumes reduces nitrogen demand. We do not describe our produce as organic, because it is not certified as such.
